Outside the war zone, an officer of the Philippines Army is fighting for the preservation of environment from further degradation by planting mangrove seedlings along the coast of Barangay Hinaplanon in Iligan City, Mindanao. In 2011, Iligan City was hit the hardest by typhoon “Sendong” which according to the government caused damage to infrastructure amounting to Php1.42 B; agriculture amounting to Php312.3 M, and claimed more than 1000 lives. It was reported that logging operations in the forest allowed the massive deluge carrying harvested logs from rushing to the low- lying communities.
